Kate

When I think of Kate, I think of rainbows and fairy wings. Honestly. There’s a bit of a back story to that, but the short version is she is a good friend of my sisters, and they both used to spend a lot of time pretending to be faeries.

She also has this magnificent light about her, like she is connected to the universe in a different way, full of love and light. I suppose you could call her a ‘free spirit’, there’s just something about her. You can’t help but smile and feel like everything is okay when you are around Kate.

She is also very creative and open minded, so when I asked her to help me out with an idea I had, she was up for it. Chloe came along too for a bit of support. Two very brave girls considering it was winter in Tasmania and we were working outdoors. In a creek. In the shade. (Thanks girls, you seriously rock!)

I really hope you enjoy these photos. They are a bit different to the ones I’ve been sharing so far, but these come from the heart, from that creative space deep inside my soul. Personally I love them, so I truly hope that you can see what I see. Leave me a comment and let me know what you think. And if you would like to have something a little bit different for your own portrait session, get in touch, I’m always happy to do things outside of the square.

Anita

When I was building up my photo portfolio in preparation for the relaunch, I put out a casting call for ladies over a certain size. The reason was, so many women I have spoken to tell me “wow, I love the idea of having photos like that done of me! But I just need to lose a bit more weight first…”

And you know what? I don’t think you do need to. I think that your family, your children if you have any, your partner, all the people in your life… they love you, because you are you. They don’t think any less of you because you have a bit of “extra” weight on (and let’s be honest, the majority of the time, you really don’t have any “extra”). And conversely, I don’t think that they would think more of you if you did lose that few kilos.

I wanted you to see that, too. I wanted to feature women in my relaunch of all shapes and sizes, to show you that you don’t need to wait to have those photos. I want to document you as the real you, for your curves or your straight lines, however you are made.

So I was absolutely over the moon when Anita contacted me to organise a session. Because she doesn’t have a “magazine style” body, but you know what? She’s damn beautiful. And she knows how to rock her style, and she is happy in her skin. And I think that shows in her portraits. She is so happy, and bubbly, and her personality is downright awesome. I had a great time working with her, and I hope that you can see her gorgeous soul shining through these images.

Jaala

I met with Jaala and Anita on an extremely chilly morning in the Derwent Valley. Jaala is more of a local to the area than me, and we found a lovely little quiet spot near the water to hold our session. I don’t normally make a habit of creating dresses in public toilets but on this particular morning it was the warmest option! I don’t think I’ll ever forget the look on the face of a lady who came in to use the loo and found three ladies in there, two of them in the middle of being dressed in evening gowns!

Jaala is such a classically beautiful woman, and very theatrical which was a bonus. I love the green tone of the dress which I made for her, it suits her perfectly, and with the glittering headpiece she was definitely a princess. Thank you for all the laughs Jaala, it was wonderful working with you.

I hope you enjoy the photos,

Chloe

Beautiful Chloe, who braved a cool morning in the Derwent Valley for her portrait session. A mother of two, stepmum to one, wife, sister, daughter… Our session gave her a chance to just be Chloe. Calm, elegant, relaxed and simply gorgeous.

Quite by chance, one of the images we created has become the face of Rachel Baker Photography, and I feel it embodies just what I want you to feel when you have your portrait taken with me: serenity.

Enjoy these photos, and if you would like to see how they look printed and framed the images from the relaunch will be hanging at Sarah Muir Body Care in Moonah for another couple of weeks.

The launch party!

The date has been set for the official launch party!

When I started Rachel Baker Photography in 2011 I was predominantly a newborn photographer. My journey has taken me along an exciting path to be where I am now – photographing women. Come along to 57 Main Rd Moonah on Saturday 30 August from 5pm to celebrate the relaunch of my business and see some examples of my current work. I will be there to talk to and answer any questions you have, and some of the women I have photographed so far will also be there to talk about the experience from their point of view.

Hope to see you there!

The dresses

My husband asked me recently “why do you make the dresses for your photoshoots? Why don’t you just buy them? You’re not a seamstress”. It made me realise that maybe other people were wondering the same thing! So here is my reason.

When I meet you at your photoshoot, I can see the way you hold yourself and your style, as well as your body shape. I then use the lengths of fabrics that I have to fashion a dress that will fit you perfectly, and suits you. I add embellishments, ribbons, lace, flowers, sparkly things, whatever works with your dress. I can put the waistline wherever it looks great on you – empire, drop waist, natural waist. And I can choose colours of the dress details that compliment your skin tone and hair colour.

As well as being able to create a dress that is designed just for you, it also means that it is a one off piece. No one else will ever wear that dress but you, because at the end of the session, the pins are taken out and it all just becomes a pile of fabric again. And I think that’s a little bit special.
